Antioxidative homeostasis was investigated in blood plasma and lymphocytes of patients with hypertonic disease (stage II). The intensification of lipid peroxidation was accompanied by accumulation of polyenic fatty acid derivatives and toxic dialdehydes and also by mobilization of lipid soluble vitamins. Vitamin E is probably involved into direct binding of toxic LPO products. Such changes provide high antioxidant activity and normal functioning of lymphocytes.

Submitted in the paper are data on clinical, hemodynamic, and neurohumoral effects of monotherapy with an inhibitor of the angiotensin-converting enzyme berlipril (enalapril maleate) and a calcium antagonist of the benzothiazepine series retalzem (diltiazem resinate) versus their combination therapy. The combination therapy offers a number of important advantages over monotherapy with the above-named agents, consisting in apparent hypotensive action and a greater activation of endothelium-derived vasodilating and antiaggregation substances.

The article presents data on effects of losartan (Cozaar of the Merck-Sharp-Dohme firm, USA) on neurohumoral indices in patients with mild to moderate forms of hypertension. Apart from optimum hypotensive effect and modulating influence on morphofunctional parameters of the heart losartan was found to be endowed with a broad spectrum of neurohumoral effects (reduction in the ejection of catecholamines, natriuretic hormone, stabilization of indices for the renin-angiotensin system etc.). Moreover, the given drug preparation does not have appreciable effect on the activity of the kallikrein-kinin system, by which property it differs favourably from angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

Plasmapheresis effects on hemodynamics, neurohumoral, immunological and cell parameters were examined in 48 patients with refractory hypertension. Hypotensive effect of plasmapheresis was found to combine with positive hemodynamics and microcirculatory shifts, pressor factor activity inhibition, slowing of immunocomplex condition progress, reduced red cell deformability in refractory hypertension.

Changes of membrane potential of lymphocytes of peripheral blood under the influence of the activation agents: phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A and Ca(2+)-ionophore A 23187 in 25 patients (men) with hypertensive disease and 8 healthy persons (men) aged 25 to 35 years have been studied. The results obtained testify to the existence of functional disturbances of lymphocytes' membrane and confirmed the wide-spread of the membrane defect in patients with hypertensive disease.

The effect of human recombinant interleukin-2, one of the potent mediators of the immune system, on the course of emotional hypertension in non-linear white rats has been investigated. A significant and prolonged hypotensive action of a single injection of interleukin-2 in hypertensive rats has been revealed. The data obtained can be a new evidence of participation of immune system in the development of hypertension in experimental animals.

The state of humoral immunity was investigated in 72 young-age patients suffering of hypertensive disease. It was established that there occurred an increase of the level of immunoglobins, circulating immune complexes and antibodies to lipoproteids of low density in hypertensive disease. This indicates the importance of immunological changes in the pathogenesis of hypertensive disease.

Natriuretic hormone is a digoxin-like substance that inhibits Na-K-ATPase, membraneous sodium pump, leads to storage of sodium in the cells, increases their tone which plays a key role in the increase of peripheral resistance of the blood vessels and progression of hypertensive disease. Results indicate that the level of natriuretic hormone was increased at all stages of hypertensive disease, positively correlated with aldosterone and kallikrein and negatively--with the plasma renin activity that confirms its pressor action.

The authors established essential efficacy of monotherapy using ultraviolet irradiation of the blood in stable stenocardia of functional class II. It was also established that this method increased tolerance to physical load, correction of the hemodynamics and microcirculation.
